Information about Driving Licences

Driving licence

A provisional driving licence for a car can be applied for up to 2 months before your 17th birthday and your licence will be dated from your birthday. If you receive Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate (mobility component) you can currently have a licence from age 16.

You can apply for a new or updated licence on the Direct.gov web site

The driving licence comes in two parts – the photo-card and the paper counterpart.

Ensure you keep both parts as you need to show them to your driving instructor on your first lesson and when you attend both your Theory and Driving Test.

Car licences are normally valid until your 70th birthday and you will need to renew your photo every 10 years.
