Plan the route of your journey by check the weather forecast and traffic information websites to find out if there are or are likely to be any problems on your intended route.

Before starting your journey ensure you have clear visibility by clearing all windows and mirrors of ice and/or snow and that the insides of the windows are de-misted. Clear snow from lights so they are clearly visible and from the roof to ensure large lumps do not slide onto your windscreen reducing visibility or fall off the back of your car onto other cars. Check your window washer bottle is full, has screen wash with antifreeze in it and that your window washers and wipers are not frozen and working.

10 essential items to keep in your car

  • Ice scraper and de-icer
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Warm clothes and a blanket
  • Boots
  • First aid kit
  • Jump leads
  • A shovel
  • Food and a warm drink in a thermos
  • Reflective warning sign
  • Sunglasses – the glare from the snow, icy or wet roads can be dazzling

Whilst on your journey be aware of the outside temperature and the risk of ice. Road conditions can change during your journey, depending on the elevation of the road, exposure to sun or shade and amount of traffic using the road.
